a) To contribute to the implementation of the faculty development and orientation plan; b) To facilitate research and studies on the Principles of Atatürk and the History of the Turkish Revolution, to publish relevant works, and to establish a library and documentation center by compiling domestic and international publications; c) To collect knowledge and experience gained in applied fields for use in teaching and to transform them into teaching materials; d) To achieve the Center’s objectives: to organize courses, seminars, conferences, and other scientific meetings and congresses; e) To establish advisory, educational, and research relationships between the University and private and public institutions; f) To perform other duties assigned under the Higher Education Law No. 2547
Our Vision
To collaborate with public and private institutions and organizations and organize activities aimed at achieving the Center’s objectives. To carry out joint activities with other applied research and research centers at our university, provided that such activities fall within the Center’s scope of work. To organize scientific events such as panels, congresses, conferences, etc., within the scope of the Center’s activities.
Quality Policy
To organize scientific meetings—such as panels, conferences, and congresses—featuring experts in their fields as part of the Center’s activities, and to contribute to the promotion of the university through these events. To enhance the university’s visibility by collaborating with other research and application centers and units within the university, within the scope of the Center’s areas of activity.
Message from the Center Director
The Atatürk Principles and History of the Revolution Research and Application Center was established by Decision No. 93/2-1 of the Balıkesir University Senate dated February 10, 1993. The Center’s objectives are:
a- To contribute to the implementation of the faculty development and orientation plan,
b- To facilitate research and studies on the Principles of Atatürk and the History of the Turkish Revolution, to produce relevant publications, and to establish a library and documentation center by compiling domestic and international publications,
c- To collect knowledge and experience gained in applied fields for use in teaching and to transform them into instructional materials,
d- To organize courses, seminars, conferences, and other scientific meetings and congresses to achieve the Center’s objectives,
e- To establish advisory, educational, and research relationships between the University and private and public institutions,
f- To carry out other duties assigned under the Higher Education Law No. 2547. In line with its founding objectives, our center regularly organizes academic activities for students, such as panels and conferences, featuring experts in their fields. When selecting topics for these panels and conferences, we focus each year on the process of the founding of the Republic of Turkey and various issues that arose after the proclamation of the Republic; we discuss World War I, the War of Independence, the process of the Republic’s founding, and prominent figures who made significant contributions during and after that period, thereby educating our students. To the extent possible, our Center organizes field trips to historical sites in our city and across the country to help students better understand the events of the National Struggle period and the subsequent era.
Through these student-oriented activities, the Atatürk Principles and History of the Revolution Research and Application Center contributes to the promotion of our university on the one hand, and to research in the field of Republican History through the organization of symposia and the publication of academic works on the other. In this context, our center published an edited volume titled “The Republic of Turkey: From the War of Independence to the 21st Century” in 2023. The purpose of this study is to contribute, even in a small way, to research in this field through a collection of articles selected from various disciplines related to the century-long history of our Republic—as it marks the completion of its first century this year, under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk—under the auspices of the Balıkesir University Center for Research and Application on Atatürk’s Principles and the History of the Revolution. In line with our Center’s objectives, an academic book project is also planned for the coming period.
Efforts are ongoing to launch a periodically published electronic journal to further contribute to studies on the history of the Republic of Turkey, with plans for its launch in the coming years. At the end of World War I, the Ottoman Empire suffered a crushing defeat and was forced to sign the Armistice of Mudros. Following the signing of the armistice, the Allied Powers began to occupy our country, citing Article 7 of the Armistice of Mudros as justification. The Turkish nation reacted strongly to these occupations, and as a result of the National Struggle launched under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Pasha, the enemy forces were routed. With the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne, the fully independent Republic of Turkey was established. This journal, which is scheduled for publication, aims to provide an academic assessment of the political developments faced by the Ottoman Empire, the events that took place during the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the period of the National Struggle and the War of Independence, the founding of the Republic of Turkey, and the events that have occurred up to the present day. In this way, it will contribute to academic research in this field.
Some of our activities are carried out in collaboration with the Research Centers, Directorates, Deans’ Offices, and Student Clubs within our University. This ensures that our activities involve broader participation and reach wider audiences. We provide support for activities organized by student clubs founded by our University’s students that align with the founding objectives of our center.
The activities of the Atatürk Principles and History of the Revolution Research and Application Center are not limited to our University’s students; requests from public institutions and organizations, as well as civil society organizations outside the University, are also evaluated by the Center’s administration. The need for researchers with expertise in the requested subject area is met either by our Center or by the University itself. In addition, support is also sought from academics at other universities in our country.Our center organizes panels and conferences for secondary school students at secondary education institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education, and provides information to these students.
The activities of the Atatürk Principles and History of the Revolution Research and Application Center continue to grow each year and reach broader audiences. These activities contribute to raising awareness of both our center and our university.
